Okay guys, let’s take a moment to discuss the dress code. They’re not the most exciting part of dressing for an event – there’s nothing like having some obscure dress code printed on an invitation to soak up the joy of getting ready for a wedding faster—— but understanding them is an absolute must. No matter how many parties I attend, I always seem to be guessing in hindsight what the terms semi-formal, business casual, and cocktail party attire really mean, and what exactly to wear at each type of event.
While I usually think it’s always better to dress too much than overdress, it’s also very uncomfortable to be in a dress somewhere when everyone else is wearing jeans and t-shirts. So, I did some serious research on how to dress according to each dress code. Frankly, whoever came up with the term “formal casual” should be eliminated altogether. (Hello, aren’t these two opposite terms?) Alas, there are actually specific expectations behind some of the most confusing dress code recommendations – both formal dress codes and casual dress codes.
Because it’s hard enough to buy the perfect suit when you know what to wear, I’m going to break down some of the most common dress codes for you. Whether your new job requires employees to wear business casual attire or you receive a wedding invitation with “optional black tie” written on the bottom, I’ve got you covered.
Picking out outfits should be fun and not stressful – so read on to find out how to dress according to each dress code.
This is evident for those who prefer suits to dresses, skirts and jumpsuits – wear a tuxedo. For dresses, though, it’s a bit more complicated. Technically, you can wear anything from a long skirt to a dressy piece to a formal cocktail party dress.
The best way to figure out what to wear is to wear it based on what you expect your owner to wear. Go to a high-end wedding and put on a dress. On the other hand, if you’re going to a work occasion that requires a formal dress code, a little black dress with eye-catching jewelry would be more appropriate.
Foolproof outfits: stylish dresses or classic black tuxedos
This is one of the darker dress codes. By stereotype, this means that men can choose to wear a tuxedo or a dark suit and tie. Of course, people of any gender can opt for a suit or tuxedo look. People who like dresses can wear anything, from long dresses to cocktail party dresses, as long as the style is relatively conservative. This usually means that a longer skirt is preferred, while a long slit is not. Think of it this way: you don’t need to look like you’re on your way to the Oscars, but you should still make an effort to wear formal attire.
Foolproof clothing: ankle-length dresses and statement jewelry, formal jumpsuits or dark suits
The creative black bow tie is a dress code that will make you have fun. For example, those who usually opt for a tuxedo should feel free to wear a black shirt or red bow tie instead of a cookie-cutter penguin suit. Those who want to wear something other than a tuxedo are likewise encouraged not to take their appearance too seriously.
Still confused? Think of the creative black tie as the fashion black tie. Usually, a creative black bow tie is what to expect at a themed party with a dress code like “1920s Black Bow Tie” or “Texas Black Bow Tie”, in which case choose a dressing look that fits the theme. For example, according to the dress code for a black bow tie in Texas, people can wear a tuxedo, a Poirot tie, and cowboy boots, or a tuxedo and a cowboy hat.
Foolproof outfits: formal but stylish dresses or a unique suit look.
For men, this dress code calls for a dark suit and tie. For women, cocktail party attire usually means a short skirt suitable for a party. If in doubt, wear a little black dress and dress it up with fun jewelry, or, if you want to wear colorful clothes, choose bright and interesting clothes.
Foolproof clothing: a little black dress or a casual suit
This dress code is often seen on invitations during the festival, and the festive attire is similar to cocktail party attire but with a festive touch. Try a sparkly sequined dress, a red satin skirt, or a suit with some festive touches.
Foolproof outfits: sequins party dresses or suits with a festive vibe
The recommended dress code for many daytime semi-formal events, especially working lunches and meetings, is business formal, i.e. a well-tailored dress, trouser suit, or formal suit. The idea was to wear something that was suitable for a business occasion while giving a sense of dress.
Foolproof outfits: chic trouser suits or formal blazer and pants combinations
Most corporate offices have a dress code that requires business casual attire. Pants and a blazer or pencil skirt with a fun shirt are usually good choices. Try to avoid jeans – although dark jeans may be useful in some cases – and definitely never wear sneakers.
Foolproof outfits: dark pants and a blazer or skirt and a fun shirt
This way of dressing requires you to dress up a little on top of your most casual look. Dress up your most commonly used pants with a fun pair of ankle boots, up the next level with flared jeans with heels, or pair them with a jumpsuit with a collared shirt. Or, dress up your favorite jeans with a blazer so you can hit the ground running.
